CU Philosophy Review
Students arrive in a department and rarely learn how the people teaching them arrived there. The routes taken, the questions abandoned, the reasons for staying. That knowledge exists, but it lives in conversations that most students never happen to have.
CU Philosophy Review is a student journal that puts those conversations on the record. Each issue centres on interviews with philosophers in the department, written up so that a first-year student can read them and see a path. I co-founded the journal in June 2026 with Lee Kwok Shun and now serve as its Chief Editor.
First issue
The first issue asks what the discipline looks like from the positions women occupy within it, and it centres on interviews with Professor Park So-Jeong and Professor Ye Ru. We chose the theme because it is the question our own department raised most often and answered least publicly.
The issue also carries student essays and departmental notes. It appears in October 2026, in print and online.
How we work
Before drafting questions for an interview, each editor reads the professor’s published work. The questions then begin from what she takes to be central, rather than from what we assumed in advance. It costs more time and it is the whole point. An interview that could have been given by anyone is not worth the hour we are asking of her.
Every set of questions is reviewed by a second editor before it is sent, and every interviewee sees the written text and approves it before it appears.
Editorial team
The journal began with two of us. Two further editors joined during the first issue, and I am training a first-year student to take the journal over when I graduate. A publication that depends on the person who founded it has not been founded properly.
